Visa

  • Student Visa (留学 – Ryūgaku) under Status of Residence
  • Obtain a confirmed admission/offer from a MEXT-recognized Japanese university or language school
  • Japanese institution applies for the CoE on the student’s behalf with the Immigration Services Agency in Japan
  • Processing time: 6–10 weeks (sometimes longer during peak intake)
  • Student must demonstrate ability to cover tuition + living costs.
  • Once approved, the university sends: Original CoE (or electronic CoE in many cases)
  • Complete Student Visa Application Form
  • Submit Visa Application at Japanese Embassy/Consulate

Funds

  • Tuition - ¥1.5–2.0 million/year to cover tuition
  • Living Expenses: ¥1.0–1.2 million/year

Financial Rules:

  • Accepted: Self-funded bank balance, parent/guardian sponsor, scholarship (MEXT, JASSO, university)
  • Not accepted: Sudden large deposits, unverifiable sponsors, non-liquid assets (property, fixed deposits) often rejected

Arrival

Pre-Departure Checklist:

  • Book flight aligned with university arrival window , Carry originals: passport with visa, CoE, admission letter, financial proof, Arrange accommodation, Purchase travel insurance, Prepare Japanese address registration documents, Carry academic originals + multiple photocopies


At the Border:

  • Travel to Japan allowed within visa validity
  • Residence card issued at airport immigration for most major airports
  • Register address at local city office within 14 days
  • Enroll in National Health Insurance
